Introduction of New TOP GUN Ceramic Models
IWC Schaffhausen has introduced two new models in its “Colors of TOP GUN” collection, showcasing its mastery in creating colored ceramic watches with bold monochromatic designs. The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland is the initial Timezoner® made in colored ceramic, showcasing a dark green ceramic case with a Ceratanium® case ring and crown. The patented Timezoner® function enables the wearer to switch between different time zones by simply pressing down and rotating the bezel. Additionally, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert is IWC’s initial 41-millimeter Pilot’s Chronograph with a sand-colored ceramic case.
The “Colors of TOP GUN” Collection
In 2022, IWC Schaffhausen launched its “Colors of TOP GUN” collection, featuring various Pilot’s Watches in unique ceramic colors such as Woodland and Lake Tahoe. These ceramic hues were inspired by color codes from naval aviation and developed in collaboration with Pantone®. The Swiss luxury watchmaker has now expanded this collection with two new models.
Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland
The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland (Ref. IW395601) has a case made of Woodland green ceramic. The dark green shade is inspired by the flight suits and uniforms of TOPGUN pilots and the extensive forest landscapes they navigate. The timepiece stands out with its monochromatic design, where every component from the dial and hands to the rubber strap and luminescent material is carefully matched to the ceramic case color through a meticulous engineering process. The case ring and crown are crafted from matte black Ceratanium®, an IWC-developed material that combines titanium’s structural integrity with ceramic’s hardness and scratch resistance.
Innovative Timezoner® Function
Thanks to the integrated Timezoner® function, the watch can be set to a different time zone by pressing down and rotating the bezel. The hour hand, 24-hour display, and date move forward or backward in one-hour steps, adjusting seamlessly across the dateline without losing a second. The city ring is crafted from green ceramic, and its outer bezel is made of Ceratanium®. It displays the names of 24 major cities, each representing a different international time zone. The timepiece is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82760 caliber, an automatic movement featuring a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components, providing a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire case back.
Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert (Ref. IW389402) is the third 41-millimeter ceramic chronograph in IWC’s collection. The case is made of sand-colored ceramic, known as Mojave Desert, inspired by the flight suits of naval aviators and the desert landscape around China Lake, home to the U.S. Navy’s TOPGUN flight school. The dark brown dial and hands, along with the printing and luminescent material, and the rubber strap with a textile inlay, harmonize perfectly with the case. The crown, chronograph pushers, and case back are made of matte grey titanium. The IWC-manufactured 69380 caliber movement operates inside the case. This sturdy chronograph movement with a traditional column-wheel design consists of 242 individual components. The vertical dial layout typical of IWC places the stopped minutes right at the 12 o’clock position, greatly improving readability. An effective double pawl winding system utilizes rotor movements in both directions to generate a 46-hour power reserve in the mainspring. The movement is shielded from magnetic fields by a soft iron inner case, and the front glass is specially designed to resist sudden air pressure drops.
IWC’s Pioneering Use of Ceramic
IWC is a pioneer in using ceramic for watch cases. In 1986, the company introduced the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (Ref. 3755), the world’s first wristwatch with a black zirconium oxide ceramic case. IWC was also among the first to develop various ceramic colors such as white, blue, and green. To produce a colored ceramic watch case, zirconium oxide is mixed with various metallic oxides. The final color is achieved by precisely mixing these raw materials in specific ratios. Additionally, the manufacturing process, including parameters like temperature and sintering duration, must be adjusted for each specific color.
