Key Figures Attend Maritime Ceremony

The traditional maritime ceremony, marking the transfer of the new ship to its owner, was graced by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, the ship’s godmother Stefania Vago, and Fincantieri’s Chairman Biagio Mazzotta, alongside the constructor’s CEO and General Manager Pierroberto Folgiero. Representatives from MSC’s construction team, along with managers and workers from the shipyard, were also present.

EXPLORA II’s Features and Itinerary

Weighing in at 63,900 GT, the EXPLORA II will navigate the Caribbean Sea in winter and return to the Mediterranean for the summer of 2025. This luxury vessel boasts 461 oceanfront suites, penthouses, and residences, six restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, four swimming pools, and a variety of wellness facilities.

Keel-Laying Ceremony for EXPLORA III

Today also saw the keel-laying ceremony for EXPLORA III at the shipyard, where commemorative coins were embedded within the ship as a symbol of good fortune. This ceremony was officiated by godmothers Verena Koetzle, Global Head of Public Relations for Explora Journeys, and Martina Giardina, Public Area Supervisor at the Fincantieri Shipyard. The LNG-powered ship is set to enter service in 2026, with LNG providing a path to renewable options like bio-LNG.

Construction Starts for EXPLORA IV

Explora Journeys also began construction of EXPLORA IV, another LNG-fueled ship, expected to be completed in early 2027. EXPLORA V will join the fleet in 2027, followed by EXPLORA VI in 2028, both designed to incorporate large fuel cell capacity to convert renewable LNG into hydrogen, reducing emissions.

Captain Serena Melani’s Historic Role

Captain Serena Melani will lead EXPLORA II, marking a historic moment as she becomes the female captain for the second time after her role on EXPLORA I.

Innovative Design and Sustainability

EXPLORA II was designed and built under RINA Class, earning several additional notations for its innovative design focused on environmental sustainability and passenger comfort. It was awarded RINA’s “Green Plus” notation for its comprehensive environmental performance, “Comfort Noise and Vibration” notation for low noise levels, and “Dolphin” notation for minimizing noise in sensitive marine areas. The ship is also certified under the Polar Code C for safe navigation in Polar waters.

Enhancing the Guest Experience

With its Swiss precision and modern European craftsmanship, EXPLORA II enhances the guest experience. Collaborating with top designers, the ship’s design evokes an ‘Ocean State of Mind’ reflecting Explora Journeys’ luxury approach. The Journeys Lounge, casino, and Fil Rouge restaurant feature refreshed colors and materials, while the Explora Lounge, Crema Café, and Atoll Pool have new designs to create more space for guests. Outdoor experience is elevated with bespoke Unopiu furniture at the Helios Pool & Bar.

Luxurious Amenities and Artistic Touches

The Ocean Wellness Spa introduces a refined concept with updated decor, featuring Australian brand Subtle Energies. The Anthology restaurant has been redesigned for exceptional Italian fine dining. EXPLORA II will also host the first at-sea Buccellati jewelry boutique, enhancing the onboard shopping experience. Guests can enjoy original artwork by Emilio Isgró and Prince Hussein Aga Khan‘s ‘Marine Encounters,’ an exhibition of marine photographs promoting marine conservation.
